Opening the Door Just a Crack
With the recent tragic school shootings in Uvalde, Texas, Congress is seriously considering finally opening the door for stricter gun control. It seems like common sense to keep lethal weapons away from criminals and those with mental problems, but I have heard of no proposal that would effectively accomplish this.
History tells us that we should be greatly concerned with this initial and likely ineffective bill to implement gun control.
When the U.S. income tax was implemented in 1913, the top marginal rate on earned income was 7 percent. This grew to 25 percent in 1925 and is now 37 percent, although ‘rich’ people are still demonized for not paying their fair share.
Oregon first approved medical use of marijuana in 1998. Recreational use was approved in 2014, and in 2020 small amounts of all street drugs were decriminalized. In 2021, overdose deaths in Oregon rose by 41 percent over 2020 amidst a significant increase in violent and property crimes.
President Obama used an executive order to grant rights to the Dreamers in 2012 and now amnesty and citizenship are being discussed for the millions of illegals who have flooded our open southern border.
PA in stepwise fashion expanded gambling to include lotteries, slot machines, table games and now sports gambling. At least we continue to be reminded that the lottery ‘helps older Pennsylvanians’.
So, back to guns….. Drug use and crimes are rising rapidly, our borders are being flooded with illegal immigrants, and we are being asked to restrict our rights under the Second Amendment.
Based on history, how comfortable are you with opening the door to gun control by just a crack?
