Our Border is not Open-Response to a Lie
In response to the article “Our border is not “open” by John Meyer, (Tribune-Review, 3-20-22) in which he states “this administration has maintained the border policies of the previous administration”, is false. Pres. Biden, in his first hours in office, signed seventeen (17) immigration related Executive Orders and administration policy changes, one of which was to fully rescind the past administration’s border policy, in effect nullifying the will of Congress as expressed in the 2006 Secure Fence Act to construct “physical infrastructure to prevent unlawful border entry”. That bill passed the Senate with broad bipartisan support, 80 to 19, including then Sen. Biden voting in favor. As far as spending, the omnibus spending bill cuts border- security by half a billion dollars from last year, even as illegal crossings continue to spike. Illegal-immigrant apprehensions along the southwestern border skyrocketed in February 2020 to nearly 165,000, a 6.6% increase over January, and a 350% increase over February 2020, just after Biden took office.
One other matter—the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has been overwhelmed for months with illegal aliens bused in from the southern border, as many as 300 to 400 arriving every day.
Perhaps Mr. Meyer needs to do a little more research on this matter.
