Shapiro and the Little Sisters of the Poor
Attorney General Josh Shapiro used his position in the State of Pennsylvania to take the Little Sisters of the Poor to Court.
The Little Sisters of the Poor care for impoverished elderly people.
ACA, the Affordable Care Act or Obama Care, mandated that this non-profit religious organization go against their core religious beliefs and provide contraceptives and abortion drugs to their employees. In May 2017, President Trump’s Executive Order to HHS (Health and Human Services) bypassed the traditional regulation process exempting employers that had religious or moral objections. Pennsylvania and New Jersey joined together to attempt to reverse this and took the Little Sisters of the Poor to the U.S. Supreme Court.
On July 8, 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling finding that the rules set forth by HHS were valid. In the ruling, Justice Clarence Thomas said that President Trump had the authority and that for one hundred years the Little Sisters of the Poor have participated in faithful service and sacrifice.
Justice Thomas and the court majority ruled for the Little Sisters of the Poor. Justice Thomas was joined by Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Alito, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh. Justice Kagan wrote a concurrence in judgement and Justice Breyer joined her.
Religious Liberty is a cornerstone of our founding and a right protected by the 1st Amendment of the United States. Josh Shapiro’s willingness to use his position to infringe on the religious liberty of the Little Sisters of the Poor is a threat to the American way itself.
This attack on the Little Sisters of the Poor by Attorney General Josh Shapiro who continues to waste our tax money in frivolous politically driven lawsuits is just one reason we DO NOT WANT to elect Josh Shapiro for Governor of Pennsylvania.
